About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Division of the General Counsel, Governance and Compliance (GCGC) at the University of Sussex, providing strategic and operational leadership in governance at the highest levels of the institution.

Based at our beautiful Falmer campus, the Deputy University Secretary will play a vital role in supporting and coordinating the work of the University’s governing body (Council) and academic governing body (Senate), as well as their sub-committees. You will also act as Secretary to Council, Senate, and key Council-level committees, and deputise for the University Secretary when required.

Leading a dedicated governance support team, you will ensure the delivery of high-quality secretariat services and smooth governance operations throughout the annual cycle of business.

This role demands exceptional organisational and relationship management skills, as well as the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. You will work closely with the Chair of Council, committee Chairs, the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and the Chief Operating Officer (University Secretary) to ensure seamless communication and informed decision-making across the institution.

About You

We’re seeking a confident and resilient individual with a strong understanding of governance in complex organisations—ideally within higher education. You will have experience managing committee cycles, overseeing administrative logistics, and supporting senior leadership with the governance and decision-making processes.

Key attributes include:

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive information and build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to lead a small team
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality, responsive support

Experience in higher education and/or part or full ICSA (Chartered Governance Institute) qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential.

About the Division

The GCGC Division plays a critical role in enabling strategic and operational success by delivering expert legal, governance, compliance, and risk management advice and services across the University. We promote high-quality decision-making and ensure institutional compliance with legislative and regulatory obligations.
