Automation Developer – University of Glasgow
The University of Glasgow is seeking a skilled Automation Developer to join our Automation Service team. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain automation solutions that streamline operations, eliminate repetitive manual work, and support business efficiency across the institution. You will collaborate with various departments throughout the automation lifecycle, ensuring that deployed solutions continue to deliver measurable value and run smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with academic and administrative teams to identify opportunities where automation can make the biggest impact.
- Translate operational needs into secure, scalable, and innovative automation solutions that simplify processes and reduce manual workloads.
Design and Implementation
- Develop and deploy automation workflows using industry-leading tools such as UiPath, Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere, or Microsoft Power Platform.
- Test and refine solutions to ensure reliability, performance, and data integrity before transitioning them into live environments.
- Provide expert technical input to support smooth implementation and handover to users.
Monitoring and Maintenance
- Oversee live automation processes, ensuring consistent and uninterrupted service delivery.
- Respond promptly to incidents, bugs, or performance issues, providing both first- and second-line support.
- Continuously update and enhance existing solutions to meet evolving business and system requirements.
- Implement change requests following established governance and control procedures.
Quality Assurance and Documentation
- Maintain detailed Process Design Documents and support materials for each automation.
- Ensure adherence to the University’s standards for testing, development, data security, and coding practices.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to best-practice guidelines for automation.
- Track performance metrics and gather feedback to drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrable experience or qualifications equivalent to SCQF Level 9 (Ordinary Degree or SVQ Level 4) in a relevant field, or the ability to show comparable skills through previous roles.
- Strong understanding of automation technologies and how they can be used to optimize business operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across diverse teams.
- Proficiency in testing, debugging, and maintaining automation scripts using both automated and manual approaches.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability to deliver creative technical solutions.
- Experience managing workloads through Agile methods and meeting tight deadlines.
- Capability to interpret complex business challenges and translate them into practical automation outcomes.
Desirable Criteria
- Industry-recognized certifications in automation (e.g., UiPath Certified Professional).
- Experience in a higher education or research environment.
- Knowledge of RPA tools, SQL, APIs, and Microsoft Power Platform.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, Git) and software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies.
- Awareness of automation security standards and best practices.
Experience Required
- Proven track record in developing and supporting digital or automation-based solutions.
- Experience handling software lifecycles from requirements gathering to deployment and testing.
- Background in maintaining live automation processes and managing version control systems.
- Strong documentation skills, including creating testing procedures and support materials.
Salary and Contract
- Grade 7: £41,064 – £46,049 per annum
- Contract type: Full-time, open-ended
