About the Role
The University of Glasgow is seeking a proactive and technically skilled Digital Collections and Discovery Developer to join its Library Collections team. In this pivotal role, you will enhance and maintain key digital systems that support our research, teaching, and archival goals. Your focus will include the development and support of collection management systems, digital preservation solutions, and user-facing discovery applications.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and support technical enhancements for core digital library systems, including archive and special collections platforms.
Develop, configure, and maintain integrations and front-end applications using APIs and open-source tools.
Collaborate with IT Services and the Digital Library Team to ensure seamless functionality and optimal system performance.
Drive the implementation of new tools and workflows related to digital preservation and metadata management.
Evaluate and improve data discovery services, accessibility features, and user experience.
Actively participate in sector-specific working groups, contribute to open-source development, and stay up to date with best practices in digital collections and archives.
Support strategic projects aligned with the University’s World Changers Together plan.
About You
You will be an adaptable, technically proficient developer with a strong interest in digital libraries, archives, or cultural heritage. Your background should include hands-on experience with content management systems, programming languages, and digital integration.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field, with strong personal development in technical roles.
- Solid knowledge of metadata schemas and semantic interoperability (e.g., MARC21, Dublin Core, EAD).
- Experience with languages and tools such as Python, JavaScript, HTML5, XML, XSLT, JSON, MySQL/MariaDB, Git.
- Proven ability to design and manage system integrations and develop web-based solutions.
- Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience supporting digital assets, collections, or archival systems in a Higher Education or cultural heritage environment.
Desirable:
- Experience with OAI-PMH, Linked Open Data, or digital preservation frameworks.
- Familiarity with discovery services and repository platforms such as ArchivesSpace or DSpace.
