Position Overview
The University of Reading is inviting applications for a Teaching & Research Technician to join our Technical Services team. This is a full-time, permanent position supporting teaching and research in Chemistry and Pharmacy. The role will contribute directly to practical learning and research excellence on our Whiteknights Campus, with hands-on responsibility for undergraduate practical sessions, safety training, and assisting research activities.
This position is ideal for individuals passionate about science education and research support, and eager to engage with both students and staff in a collaborative academic environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, set up, and supervise practical classes for Chemistry and Pharmacy undergraduate programs.
- Deliver critical safety training and provide technical guidance to students and staff.
- Assist in research projects, supporting experimental work to ensure high-quality scientific outcomes.
- Operate, maintain, and monitor laboratory equipment for a range of chemistry activities.
- Maintain technical standards in the department, identifying and prioritising any issues for further action.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure laboratory workflows and experiments run efficiently and safely.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- HNC, AS/A-Level, NVQ3, or equivalent in a Chemistry-related discipline.
- Ability to train, demonstrate, and guide students and staff, explaining procedures and proper use of equipment.
- Significant knowledge of techniques used in Chemistry and related laboratory work.
- Proven experience in operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Ability to monitor technical standards, identify issues, and escalate where required.
- Strong communication, organisational, and teamwork skills.
