About the Role
The University of Reading is seeking a passionate and strategic communicator to lead national communications for the DfE-funded Climate Ambassadors programme. This initiative mobilises schools, colleges, and nurseries across England to embed meaningful climate action and sustainability practices into education settings.
As Communications Lead, you will craft and deliver strategic messaging, engaging content, and resources that inspire action and reach diverse education audiences, including those traditionally harder to engage. This role blends creativity, leadership, and environmental impact to help build a greener future through education.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a national communications strategy for the Climate Ambassadors programme.
- Create adaptable resources and messaging tailored to regional hubs.
- Manage programme communications across social media, newsletters, and the website.
- Collaborate with Department for Education sustainability initiatives, including:
- Sustainability Support for Education
- National Education Nature Park
- Let’s Go Zero
- Champion inclusive, accessible, and digital-friendly communications.
- Contribute one day per week to wider environmental communications at the University of Reading.
Who You’ll Work With
You will be part of the University’s External Relations team, reporting to the Director of Communications and Engagement. You will work closely with the Head of School for Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences, consortium partners, and national sustainability programme teams.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a dynamic, creative communicator who can:
- Deliver communications for large-scale projects or multi-stakeholder initiatives.
- Translate complex climate and sustainability concepts into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences.
- Apply inclusive communications practices and ensure digital accessibility.
- Confidently use social media platforms including LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook.
- Collaborate effectively, innovate, and drive impact in a national sustainability programme.
