Who We Are
The UCL Institute of Archaeology is a globally recognised centre for archaeological and heritage research, and the UK’s largest department in its field. Our staff and students engage in high‑quality projects across five continents, supported by dedicated laboratory and heritage facilities. Islamic archaeology features actively in our teaching and research portfolio. We host a vibrant community of academic staff, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students working on the Islamic world (Middle East, Africa, Central Asia), and our Islamic Archaeology Network organises regular events including an annual “Islamic Archaeology Day”. We offer successful and popular modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Islamic archaeology and heritage.
Role Overview
We are seeking a full‑time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) specialising in Islamic Archaeology to join our teaching team. You will:
- Deliver core and optional teaching modules in Islamic archaeology/heritage for undergraduate and master’s students.
- Act as personal tutor to undergraduate students.
- Help raise the profile of Islamic archaeology within the Institute.
- Contribute to supporting and supervising teaching, assessment and administration across the Department as needed.
- This appointment covers the period in which Corisande Fenwick (Professor) is on research leave and serving as Faculty Vice‑Dean (Research).
Person Specification & Profile
Essential qualifications & experience:
- A completed PhD in archaeology, art history or a related discipline, with a substantive research focus on the Islamic world (pre‑1800).
- Proven ability to deliver modules in Islamic archaeology/heritage at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Capacity to teach, or to contribute to, core archaeology/heritage modules and skills‑based training for undergraduates (for example field archaeology, GIS, post‑excavation analysis, collections/artefact management).
- Competence in supporting student learning and acting as personal tutor for undergraduates.
Desirable attributes:
- Experience of module design or curriculum development in archaeology or heritage.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and inclusive student support.
- Engagement with departmental administration and broader departmental initiatives in research, teaching or outreach.
