Overview of the Role
Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Children and Young People’s Service (CYPS) team based at Unither House, Chertsey, serving the North-West Surrey area.
The postholder will lead on assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for children and young people presenting with a range of mental health needs, working within a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
This role is ideal for both experienced consultants and newly appointed specialists looking for strong mentorship, supportive colleagues, and opportunities for professional development.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist psychiatric assessment, formulation, and treatment for children and adolescents.
- Provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary CYPS team, collaborating with psychologists, nurses, therapists, SAS doctors, trainees, and social care professionals.
- Hold a caseload of approximately 60 patients with 2–3 new assessments per month.
- Undertake regular consultant reviews at 6-week intervals and ongoing 2–3-monthly reviews.
- Participate in the out-of-hours emergency rota, supporting junior clinicians and offering senior input for young people presenting in A&E.
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and high-quality multidisciplinary working.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Registration
MBBS or equivalent medical degree
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Section 12 approval (or ability to obtain within 6–12 months)
Desirable
- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Additional higher degree (MD/PhD/MSc)
- Interest in leadership, teaching, or service development
Eligibility
- On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining CCT
- Good standing with the GMC
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Strong bio-psycho-social clinical approach
- Experience across a range of care settings: community, inpatient, specialist teams
- Awareness of national mental health policy and legislation
Desirable:
- Teaching or training qualifications
- Compliance
- This role requires an Enhanced DBS Check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
