About the Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) seeks a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology with an honorary consultant contract at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This senior clinical academic will:

Lead clinical trials and provide clinical leadership as Clinical Director of the Brighton & Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).

Collaborate with the Sussex Cancer Centre and the Health and Care Research Partnership to develop oncology research initiatives.

Contribute to strategic planning, grant applications, and funding acquisition to advance oncology research across Sussex.

The role supports the development of a clinical academic oncology group within BSMS and the Trust, fostering interdisciplinary research in both solid and haematological malignancies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a personal research programme and provide mentorship to research-active academic and NHS colleagues.
  • Develop the cancer-focused trial portfolio, including translational, early-phase, and optimisation trials.
  • Engage with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, providing high-quality training in oncology.
  • Collaborate with external organisations to enhance research and education networks.
  • Support student-led oncology initiatives including placements, Student Selected Components (SSCs), and Individual Research Projects.
  • Hold a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant role, delivering clinical oncology services and supporting patient care.

Candidate Profile

Essential:

  • CCT in Medical or Clinical Oncology with specialist training completed.
  • Proven track record in clinical trials and research leadership.
  • Experience in developing clinical trial portfolios and acquiring research funding.
  • Strong mentorship, teaching, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to engage across academic, clinical, and NHS organisational boundaries.

Desirable:

  • Research expertise in oncology areas complementary to BSMS strengths, including global health, infection, mental health, or translational haemato-oncology.
  • Experience with solid tumours (gynaecological, breast, lung, GI, skin) or post-licensing trials.
  • Experience in cross-cutting themes: health inequalities, population health/prevention, coastal community health.
