An amazing opportunity exists for an experienced health and safety expert to join the Governance, Compliance, and Risk Department at the University of Northampton.

The Health and Safety Advisor will join the Health and Safety Department and collaborate with the Health and Safety team to design and implement the University’s Health and Safety Strategy and Annual Plans of Work.

You will be responsible for delivering the University’s health and safety management system, which includes training, risk assessments, and the preparation of inspection and audit reports.

You must be able to apply your skills, knowledge, and experience to a wide range of health and safety and fire safety concerns appropriate for a higher education setting.

To effectively connect with our academic and professional services staff, as well as our student population, you will need exceptional communication, relationship building, and presenting skills.

About You

You will have worked in a health and safety advising capacity in a diverse and complex multi-disciplinary organisational context with the following skills, knowledge, and experience:

Current and up-to-date knowledge of health and safety legislation, rules, and advice.

have a thorough awareness of facility-related health and safety issues such as fire and building maintenance risks, project safety, and contractor management.

Have report writing and policy preparation skills, as well as the ability to present and contribute effectively in committee settings.

Capable of creating and delivering training on a wide variety of health and safety and fire safety topics.

skills and experience in designing, implementing, and delivering safety management and process solutions.

Capable of conducting accident and incident investigations and creating reports for senior management review.

Experienced in guiding safety inspections as well as developing and delivering audits, including theme and compliance audits covering a wide range of health, safety, and fire safety topics.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or similar)
  • Membership in the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) with at least Technical Standard or equivalent
  • Working for NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Working for NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
  • Qualifications in teaching adults, such as ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ (PTLLS).

Department

The Health and Safety Department is a tiny unit of the university’s Governance, Risk, and Compliance department. It establishes the institution’s health and safety strategy, assists line managers in satisfying their statutory requirements to provide a safe workplace that improves the staff and student experience, and fosters internal and external communities.

The Governance, Compliance, and Risk Department has the following responsibilities:

Corporate Governance, Risk Management, Data Security, and Health and Safety.
