Job Description

Job Purpose:

To provide expert technical and training services in a state-of-the-art academic cleanroom, specializing in nanofabrication. You will manage equipment specifications, identify failures, and ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of nanofabrication tools. Reporting to the Director of Operations or Research Engineer, you will mentor junior staff and serve as a technical resource to the wider community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Offer specialized technical knowledge and advice to cleanroom users, enhancing their learning experience and supporting research goals.

Supervise and deliver advanced training on complex technical resources and techniques.

Ensure best practices for operating, processing, and maintaining equipment, and provide detailed reports on findings.

Contribute to the setup of new equipment and systems, as well as designing data analysis strategies. Perform complex data analysis, identify trends, and present findings, including research or Pareto analysis.

Troubleshoot technical issues, suggest improvements, and modify Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Diagnose and resolve faults with specialized equipment, ensuring safety and professionalism.

Stay updated on technical developments and expand your skills through continuous professional development (CPD).

Handle administrative duties, such as recording services, breakdowns, faults, and maintaining accurate data.

Oversee compliance with Health and Safety regulations and other legal requirements, ensuring records are maintained as required. Report potential issues to the line manager or Director of Operations.

Attend and contribute specialist technical input at meetings, aiming to improve user experience.

Collaborate with colleagues across the University to support research objectives and contribute to the broader strategic goals, including the Technician Commitment.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

Knowledge/Qualifications:

Essential:

A1: SCQF Level 8 (SVQ Level 4) or equivalent, with formal training and experience in a similar role.

A2: In-depth knowledge of fault diagnosis and repair.

A3: Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety, COSHH, and Risk Assessments.

A4: Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislative requirements, particularly Health and Safety.

Desirable:

B1: IOSH accreditation.

Skills:

Essential:

C1: Advanced technical skills in nanofabrication/cleanroom environments, with expertise in equipment, systems, and techniques.

C2: Strong IT proficiency, including relevant specialist software.

C3: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail in complex data.

C4: Teamworking and supervisory skills, as applicable.

C5: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt to various service users and explain technical requirements clearly.

C6: Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and allocate resources effectively.

Desirable:

D1: Working knowledge of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Experience:

Essential:

E1: Extensive experience providing high-quality technical services in a complex environment.

E2: Experience working with diverse technical users, ensuring optimal service delivery.

E3: Experience managing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Health and Safety policies.

E4: Proven experience handling competing demands in a fast-paced technical environment.

Terms and Conditions:

Salary: Grade 6, £33,232 – £36,924 per annum.

Full-time position (35 hours per week), permanent contract.
