Role Overview

As an FPGA Engineer, you will report to the Digital RF Technical Lead and be in charge of designing, developing, and testing Wideband Digitization for Digital IF systems based on FPGAs and software. Working in ETL’s Engineering department, you will help to build the latest Digital IF distribution products for ETL’s diverse product portfolio.

Join together with the world’s top DIF experts to invent and improve ETL’s array of cutting-edge Digital IF products.

Key Accountabilities

  • Design and develop a variety of modules and equipment for digital IF.
  • Integrate and test digital IF equipment.
  • Create HDL code for the VITA-49 or comparable network SDR transfer protocols.
  • Scripting in TCL designs using IP Cores for quick development.
  • Create scripts to facilitate continuous integration.
  • Design and build test benches to validate HDL code.
  • Conduct floor planning and timing analysis of designs to ensure timing closure.
  • Test HDL code on the target platform.
  • The incorporation of firmware into application design.

Our ideal applicant.

We want a candidate with extensive experience in network protocols, communications systems engineering, and digital signal processing. You should have prior expertise implementing FPGA-based network equipment, preferably with SOC FPGAs such as Zynq or Cyclone device families.

To succeed in this position, you must have exceptional FPGA abilities and expertise working on mid to large-sized designs with several code writers in a cloud CI environment. You will be familiar with high-speed sampling, signal processing, including metadata addition, and data transmission via high-speed Ethernet using L4 protocols such as V49.2 or eCPRI.

  • Relevant academic credentials at the bachelor’s or higher level.
  • Industrial experience designing Radio Frequency Systems on Chip (RFSOC/MPSOC) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with SDR protocols, such as VITA-49.
  • Experience with FPGA implementation of communication stacks.
  • Extensive experience using FPGA synthesis tools including Synplify, Vivado, Quartus, and Mentor.
  • Extensive expertise writing FPGA test benches, ideally using Verilator or cocotb.
  • Python experience with simulated DSP algorithms.
  • Verilog allows for the efficient implementation of DSP algorithms.
  • FPGA code development, synthesis, implementation, and testing, including timing closure.
  • Build scripting enables reproducible builds in a collaborative context.
  • Linux is run via the command line.
  • Experience with C/C++/Rust or another high-level language.
  • Experience working in an Agile, test-driven environment.

Remote working is possible, with monthly meetings held in either the London or Hereford offices.

All applicants must reside in the UK.
