JOB SUMMARY
At Dowty Propellers, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, reporting to the Control Systems Engineering Manager, to help the company fulfil client objectives for quality, time, and cost. Projects will involve R&D, new applications, and in-service product support.
GE Aviation Systems is a significant global supplier of electrical power, integrated avionics, and mechanical systems, including aircraft propeller systems.
Dowty Propellers, a GE company, provides sophisticated propeller systems to regional airlines, military transports, and utility aircraft. We are the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of carbon fibre composite blades and electronic propeller control systems. Dowty is also a CAA recognised Type Certificate holder, which means we have propeller design authority and are responsible for the continuous airworthiness of propeller systems in service.
Job Description.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Interface Controls Documents for the propeller control and/or de-icing systems are being developed and reviewed.
- Electrical/Electronic needs for the propeller control and de-icing systems are being developed and reviewed.
- Wiring diagrams for the propeller control and de-icing systems were developed and reviewed.
- Provide electrical technical oversight for Dowty’s sensor/effector vendors.
- Provide electrical/electronic technical oversight for Dowty’s Avionic box vendors.
- Examine DO-160 Qualification test protocols and results from sensor/effector/avionic box suppliers. (EMI/HIRF/Environmental).
- DO-160 qualification test protocols and reports for Dowty products are being developed and reviewed, as well as qualification testing support. (EMI/HIRF/Environmental).
- Provide electrical support to Dowty’s service products.
- Lead research and development work for novel electrical components in the propeller system.
- Provide electrical/electronic support to the larger controls team’s research and development work for new technology for propeller control and de-icing systems.
- Assist with propeller system and de-icing system integration and verification activities.
- Build relationships with consumers and suppliers to define the system’s requirements.
- Provide customer support for electrical/electronic propeller system aspects, including assistance with engine and aircraft testing.
- Contribute to the overall team development and progress by providing strategic feedback.
- Act as a Certification Verification Engineer for electrical/electronic propeller system components.
- Accountable for ensuring that Electrical Engineering activities are completed on time and within budget.
Essential Characteristics
- Degree in Electronics and/or Electrical Engineering, or similar knowledge, with extensive experience designing safety-critical electrical and electronic equipment.
- Extensive expertise managing and leading electrical design elements for aeronautical systems.
- Previous design and/or experience with aviation electrical systems or a similar highly regulated business.
- Knowledge of DO-160, DO-254, and ARP4754A.

- Strong problem-solving and solution-building skills.
- Experience with the DOORS requirements management tool.
- Understanding the generic system design philosophy and lifecycle, from concept to commissioning.
- Good respect for the following:
- Capabilities and limits of avionics communication buses
- EMI/HIRF in a propeller environment, with implications for propeller control systems and de-icing
- Power distribution in de-icing and propeller systems.
- Electrical interfaces among sensors, effectors, and control units
- Motion and displacement sensing technologies.
- Electric motors, controllers, and related models
- Electronic control of hydraulic systems
- Direct and indirect consequences of lightning strikes
- Electrical and electronic design for safety-critical systems. Experience using a systems engineering approach to integrated aviation systems (e.g., a combination of mechanical components and electrohydraulic control systems).
