Engineers at SSTL work on missions from concept to launch, commissioning, and operational life; this is a genuine cradle-to-grave experience that will allow you to witness your work in space in a very short period of time! This crucial role will frequently sit inside the core team of a satellite mission, collaborating with other technical leaders across many disciplines to provide technological solutions for creative projects.
Key Tasks
Mechanical Engineering Tasks
Using 3D modelling tools, develop an opto-mechanical system from the ground up.
Complete the production drawings so that the designs can be manufactured.
Support the integration of mechanical components in clean rooms, as well as optical and environmental testing.
Maintain design logs and prepare review materials.
Analysis Tasks
Perform thermal, static, and dynamic structural analysis of optomechanical components and assemblies.
General Tasks
Management of Work packages
Support production efforts by coordinating with suppliers.
Peer review of other team members’ work.
Previous Experience
Demonstrate at least 5 years of expertise designing, building, and testing optomechanical systems. Experience in other fields of precision engineering will be considered.
Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas:
Kinematic principles for mounting optical components such as lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, and detectors.
Materials and manufacturing methods.
Mechanical design with 3D CAD.
FE Analysis
Report Writing
Delivery of work bundles
Qualifications Knowledge & Skills
Degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Excellent analytical capabilities.
Competent user of FEA packages, such as ANSYS Workbench or similar
Competent use of CAD (SolidWorks or similar).
Knowledge of drawing practice according to BS8888
Confident in solving stress, kinematics, vibration, and thermal analysis problems from the ground up, as well as the ability to swiftly acquire new technical concepts.
Successful communication with project managers and customers.
Good teamwork and communication capabilities
Ability to organise and manage one’s own work, responsible for budgets and reaching project deadlines.
Good knowledge of MS Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Project.
Able to display company mindsets and behaviours, such as accountability, drive and delivery, effective communication, and successful self-management. Work as one team.
Location
