Role Overview

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology with an honorary consultant appointment at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT).

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide clinical leadership for the Brighton & Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).
  • Lead and expand clinical trials in oncology, including both solid tumors and hematological malignancies.
  • Develop and support a clinical academic oncology group across BSMS and UHSFT.
  • Engage in strategic partnership with the Sussex Cancer Centre and the Health and Care Research Partnership.
  • Contribute to teaching and mentorship across undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
  • This role is ideal for a Medical or Clinical Oncologist with a CCT in their specialty, strong experience in clinical trials, and a track record in research leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Clinical Trials

  • Lead your own oncology research programme within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine.
  • Provide clinical leadership for oncology trials, increasing recruitment, research income, and trial portfolio development.
  • Collaborate on translational research and post-licensing studies across multiple tumor types (gynaecology, breast, lung, GI, skin).
  • Support academic colleagues and NHS clinicians through mentorship and capacity-building initiatives.

Teaching & Education

  • Deliver and enhance undergraduate BMBS teaching in oncology-related subjects.
  • Provide Student Selected Components (SSCs) and guidance for 4th-year Individual Research Projects.
  • Encourage engagement from clinical colleagues outside BSMS in undergraduate education.

Leadership & Strategic Contribution

  • Contribute to institutional leadership within BSMS, including school-level strategy and planning.
  • Promote collaboration across BSMS, University of Sussex, University of Brighton, and UHSFT through the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC).
  • Maintain active engagement in national and international oncology networks.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Fully qualified Medical or Clinical Oncologist with CCT in specialty.
  • Demonstrable track record in clinical trials and oncology research.
  • Experience in academic leadership, research mentoring, and teaching.
  • Ability to contribute to strategic planning and development of clinical academic programs.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in laboratory-based or health outcomes research.
  • Engagement with interdisciplinary or translational oncology projects.
  • Track record of research funding acquisition.
