About the Role

The University of Sussex invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the CLIMB-ALS study (Comprehensive Longitudinal Imaging Study to develop MRI Biomarkers of CNS Degeneration in ALS). This project is funded by the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) and focuses on investigating microstructural changes in the brain and spinal cord of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using advanced MRI techniques.

The successful candidate will be based in the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre, collaborating closely with Dr Samira Bouyagoub (University of Sussex) and Dr Andrew Barritt (University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust). Key responsibilities include:

  • Acquisition and analysis of diffusion MRI data from ALS patients and healthy controls.
  • Handling and processing blood samples for biomarker studies.
  • Data interpretation and dissemination, including preparing publications for peer-reviewed journals and presentations for research meetings.
  • Engaging with collaborators, supporting grant writing, and contributing to the strategic direction of the project.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Doctoral-level education (PhD) in Physics, Engineering, Neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in MRI data analysis using software packages such as FSL, FreeSurfer, or SPM.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific findings to diverse audiences.
  • High attention to detail, independent working capability, and strong organisational skills.
  • Friendly, approachable manner for interacting with research participants.
