About the Role
The Department of History at the University of Sussex invites applications for a fixed-term post as Assistant Professor in Modern History.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including delivering lectures and seminars, supervising undergraduate dissertations, and undertaking marking and assessment. You will also provide academic support and guidance to students as part of our commitment to a high-quality student experience.
You will be joining an innovative, collegial, and research-active department with a strong reputation for interdisciplinary collaboration and global and comparative approaches to historical research. The department was ranked 4th in the UK for Impact in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF).
About You
You will hold a PhD in Modern History and have a growing record of research and publication in your field. Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be particularly advantageous:
- History of Science
- History of Emotions
- Global or Connected Histories
You will also bring:
- Experience of teaching in the UK higher education sector
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- A commitment to student support and inclusive teaching practices
- Experience supervising undergraduate dissertations (desirable)
- The ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive, team-oriented department

Visa Sponsorship
This role meets the requirements for Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship if appointed full-time at Grade 7.5.
Eligible candidates may qualify under Tradeable Points Option C or E.
